kissing on the hand

We were at a church fundraiser Sat night. It was an elegant evening. I wore a strapless evening dress. We said hello to Fr.L (our priest) and he kissed my hand and said that we both look very nice this evening. So what does kissing on the hand mean?

Lots of men do this to express admiration and respect for a woman's beauty, and often when they are not on intimate terms with the woman whose hand is being kissed. I see the gesture as something similar to holding doors open for a woman, taking her coat, and other similar gentlemanly acts of courtesy.
