How tolerant did you say you were?

How tolerant did you say you were? a). Allow a hooded man to amputate one of your fingers with a dirty, not so sharp dinner knife... OR... b). Your best friend gets kidnapped, tied up, and then whipped until his / her back is completely bloody...and then is released... Which do you choose and why?
